Siobhan Daniel is a South Manchester–based painter whose work is full of colour, curiosity and emotional clarity. A lifelong devotee of both visual and written art, she spent her professional career as a lecturer in English Language and Literature before retiring and giving her creative practice the space it had always deserved. Although she travelled widely in her younger years, it is in the North West, where she has lived for the past fifteen years, that her artistic voice has truly flourished.

Entirely self taught, Siobhan’s approach to painting has been shaped through practice, experimentation and a deep love of looking. Galleries, art books and conversations with fellow artists have all contributed to her evolution. At the heart of her style is a commitment to strong, unapologetic colour. She often says she does not do beige, and her paintings prove the point. Vivid tones, bold contrasts and expressive forms are her natural language.

Her favourite subjects return again and again. She is particularly drawn to faces, especially eyes, which she paints with a sense of psychological insight. She is equally inspired by the natural world and, more recently, she has found enormous joy in creating a series of cat portraits encouraged by her cat loving friends. Across these themes her work moves between controlled precision and more abstract expression, led by instinct and emotion.

Siobhan works confidently in a wide range of mediums. Acrylics are her most frequent choice, yet she also produces delicate pieces in watercolour, lively works in ink and a growing portfolio in glass paint. Her glass pieces are especially distinctive. They shimmer with light and colour and each one is a unique, unrepeatable creation.

Her influences are broad and heartfelt. She has deep admiration for Frida Kahlo, both for her emotional honesty and for the remarkable strength that carried her through adversity. She also cites Diego Rivera, Picasso, Dalí, Klee and Monet among the great artists who have shaped her imagination. Their influence is present but filtered through her own vivid palette and distinctive perspective.

Siobhan paints in her dining room, a bright and calm space that doubles as her studio. She begins only when the day’s small tasks are done, allowing her to settle in with her brushes and some cool music playing in the background. When inspiration stalls she simply picks up a brush and makes a start. The block always loosens eventually.

She hopes that those who view her work experience something positive, whether it is a lift of the spirits, a moment of connection or a sense of curiosity. Her personal favourite piece is Purple Night, which she sees as a turning point in her work. It brings together hints of South American colour with the elegance of Rennie Mackintosh and has received warm feedback from viewers.

Siobhan’s creative philosophy is simple. Trust your instinct, pick up the brush and begin. Creativity never starts with perfection, it begins with the courage to make a mark.
