Sid Spencer

Brighton, Sussex → Ramsgate, Kent

Bright, bold, and unapologetically full of life — Sid Spencer’s work celebrates colour, character and individuality. A self-taught artist from Brighton, soon relocating to Ramsgate, Sid first discovered his love of art at school, where it was his best and most natural subject.

Though he once dreamed of art college, life took him in another direction, and he taught himself instead — developing a distinctive, expressive style that shines through every piece. Sid’s work ranges from portraits and figure studies to his striking stained glass–style images, inspired by the glamour and energy of icons such as Kate Bush, Amy Winehouse, Debbie Harry and Madonna.

Working mainly on a digital tablet, Sid brings a hand-drawn warmth to his pieces, while also experimenting with oil pastels and clay sculpture. Music plays a huge part in his creative process — from 80s pop to opera and show tunes — and it often finds its way into the rhythm and mood of his art.

Recently, Sid was honoured to create a large commissioned work for The Sussex Beacon, Brighton’s HIV hospice, a project he describes as deeply meaningful.

Influenced and inspired by Grayson Perry, whom he admires for his authenticity and courage, Sid aims for his art to spark emotion — a smile, a memory, or the echo of a song.

As a full-time carer for his son with special needs, Sid’s time to create is precious — but when he draws, it’s his moment of joy, freedom and self-expression.

“Be honest in your work and keep going. If you stay true to yourself, people will see you in what you create.”
